Helping People to Learn
We are proud to say that all our work includes helping people to learn.
It is central to our business and key to the lasting success of your business.
But many have felt unsure at first:
Does the word learning remind you of what happened at school?
Is learning an instinct or can you learning skills be improved?
Helping people to learn starts with helping them overcome what they have learned (through poor experience) about learning. We have learned a lot about learning through helping experienced professionals to develop the higher learning skills needed for post-graduate work.
Here then are some pointers about learning; just some of the ideas we use in our work.
Three ways people learn:
- Doing: This is the one we all start with; ‘experiential’ learning. Having a go. Practical experience. Learning on real work or, when that is risky expensive or hazardous, through realistic simulations. Doing develops skills to deal with known and predictable situations in a particular way. It does not include knowing why!
- Memorising: Learning facts to pass the test. But ‘facts’ change. Memory alone leads to ‘surface’ learning. Not enough to cope with new challenges. Not enough to find the new solutions that a competitive world demands.
- Understanding: This is the tough one. Research into learning has revealed 5 Keys to Understanding. These keys underpin our work, leading to ‘deeper’ learning. We have added a 6th key to unlock competitive advantage by developing insight; enabling business people to learn and to lead change.
